3.1 Overview  

The analysis and reduction of ISOPHOT data require a basic knowledge of the instrument itself and the instrument procedures performed during an observation. The way ISOPHOT data is taken is given in section 3.2. This section is of importance to understand the structure of ERD products (section 6). Details are given about the readout electronics and timing control in sections 3.2.2 and 3.2.4. The most important elements of the instrument are described such as the detector subsystems (section 3.4), the internal calibrations sources (section 3.5) and focal plane chopper (section 3.6). In section 3.7 the different steps necessary to perform an ISOPHOT observation are described.
