Scope of the conference
The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) was launched on 17 November 1995 and
was operated successfully from then until its liquid helium supply was
exhausted on 8 April 1998. As the first results have already shown, ISO
has provided a breakthrough in our understanding of the composition of
cosmic gas and dust, the physical processes related to star formation, the
evolution of stars in both our and external galaxies, the mechanisms at
play in the infrared galaxies and the nature of their powering sources up
to cosmological distances. The infrared observations provided by ISO
connect many fields of astronomy through the diagnostics of the major
atomic and molecular cooling lines or important physical processes like
the dust/gas exchange and the chemistry.
By the autumn of 1998, half a year after the end of the mission, many results will be available and ready for presentation. Thus, it appears appropriate at that time to hold a major scientific meeting to summarise and discuss the results obtained during the ISO mission in all fields of astrophysics.

Science contributions
The programme of the conference
consists of
invited reviews, contributed talks, poster papers
and ample time for discussion. Special
sessions are devoted to ISO results on water vapour and to future
infrared missions.
Proceedings
The Proceedings will be published in the ESA Special Publications series (SP-
427) in February 1999. The original papers should be submitted to the editors
electronically in LaTeX form. Contributors are encouraged to bring their
papers with them to the meeting; however, the final deadline for inclusion in
the proceedings is 30 November 1998. Detailed instructions for the preparation
of the manuscripts will be provided shortly on the WWW page of the conference.

Venue
The Conference will take place at UNESCO 125, avenue de Suffren,
75007 Paris, France. UNESCO is located in the centre of Paris and can easily be reached by
metro
(line 6, Stop: Cambronne or line 10, Stop: Segur). Further details concerning
travel transportation, bus and underground transportation in Paris and
maps of Paris will be posted on the conference WWW page.
Accommodation
Participants should make hotel reservations through `HAVAS ESA Paris'.
Bookings at special ESA rates will be made in several hotels located
nearby UNESCO or in the central areas of Paris. Hotel reservation form
is attached. Please send this reservation form by fax to:
HAVAS ESA Paris
c/o Mme Yvette Bonnefoy
fax: +33 (0)1 53 69 75 60
If you have not yet done it, we recommend to send this hotel reservation form as soon as possible in order to have the best choices (price and location). The month of October is traditionally very busy in Paris and the later you wait the more difficult it will become to find hotel rooms at reasonable distances from the conference venue.
Visa
All visitors to France require a passport and some visitors may
require a visa. In case of doubt, participants are strongly advised to
check early with their travel agent or with the nearest French embassy.
It is the responsibility of each individual participant to comply with the
current regulations. It is recommended that participants from countries
requiring a visa apply well in advance.
Climate and clothing
Weather is of course unpredictable, even in France. Fall in Paris
can be very nice and sunny but also rainy. October day-time temperatures
can range between 10-25 C.
Health and insurance
All participants are strongly recommended to arrange for medical
insurance for the duration of their stay in France. The LOC
will not accept liability for sickness or accidents.
Exchange rate
The exchange rate for the French Franc is
US$ 1.-
FF. 5.70 (as of September 18, 1998).
The exchange rate is floating and may vary from the above figure.
Registration, conference fee, cancellations
Registration by all participants is mandatory. The registration fee
for the conference is FF. 1000.-. The fee includes access
to all presentations, the Abstract Book, the Conference
Proceedings, the welcome cocktail and the refreshments
during the breaks.
Payment is accepted in the form of:

Please make sure that all bank costs will be paid by you, and that the LOC receives the correct amount.
If you have not done so, could you please let us know by sending by fax or by electronic mail the enclosed form indicating that you have paid your registration fee.
We strongly urge you to pay your registration fee well in advance. This will help us in the organisation of the conference. However, in some cases payment for last-minute registration will be possible only in cash (French Francs) at the `ISO' Registration Desk on Tuesday 20 October 1998. Credit cards can not be accepted.
Conference Dinner
The conference dinner will be held on Wednesday 21, 8:00 p.m.
on a boat on the river Seine. During this boat excursion, you
will discover Paris at night with nice views of the main
buildings along the Seine. After dinner speaker
will be C. Beichman.
The dinner costs FF 250.- to be paid at the registration desk in cash and French Francs. Please, indicate your participation in the registration form. If you have already sent your registration, could you let us know by e-mail if you plan to attend the conference dinner.
