Are you wasting SWS observing time?
The SWS instrument team has noticed that some observers are not fully utilising
the merging capabilities of the SWS instrument. To recap, the two gratings (SW
and LW) can be operated simultaneously in AOTs 2, 6 and 7 if observing
wavelength regions that use the same aperture (merging is automatically carried
out for AOT 1). This means that, for example, when observing a line at 5 microns
with the SW grating it is possible to observe anywhere in the 16.5 - 27.5 micron
region without a time penalty. Not all observers are making use of this
capability and therefore they are not fully utilising the SWS.
Observers are recommended to check their observations to ensure that, where
possible, both the SW and LW gratings are used simultaneously.
For more information on merging see the SWS Observers manual. If you wish to modify your proposal in the light of this information please
